When the Microsoft Office suite moved to the “Ribbon interface,” most people had a lot of difficulty getting used to it. But as usual, everyone did get used to it. Now a lot of end users prefer the Ribbon interface to the standard interface. This has caused OpenOffice to seem outdated — even the latest release. This will change as the new Renaissance Interface arrives in the upcoming releases. (techrepublic.com)

OpenOffice goes GStreamer on Linux and Unix
The OpenOffice.org Project developers have announced that future Linux and Unix versions of their open source office suite will use the popular GStreamer multimedia framework for audio and video content playback. (h-online.com)

From the OpenOffice.org community, funded by the Sun Microsystem Inc. cross-platform open source office suite OpenOffice.org 3.0, recently launched a public beta version of the series of Beta2. (ll2t.cn)
For a few years Office had the market pretty much to itself, but there are now some strong alternatives available, and several of these are completely free to download and use. Some, like OpenOffice.Org and IBM's Symphony, are fully-featured Office alternatives with enough power for even the most demanding users. (trustedreviews.com)
